Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to hire a studio by the hour or by the day?
There is no standard price. Studios charge by the hour, half day or day, and published rates in our directory vary widely. Some studios list no figure at all. Treat listed prices as a guide, not a quote, and ask the studio for the rate on your date. More detail and the current published rates are in what a studio costs. You can also search studios in the directory.
What is usually included in the hire fee?
It depends on the studio. Sometimes you hire only the room; sometimes lights, grip or technical support come with the fee. Lights are not automatically included. Ask what is included before you book. Read what is included in the hire or filter for lighting included.
Are prices shown including or excluding VAT?
Most listings in the directory show prices excluding VAT for business use; for private clients they are sometimes including VAT. We repeat what the studio itself states. Check the listing and ask the studio to confirm. See what a studio costs.
Is there a minimum hire time?
Often yes. An hourly rate suits a short shoot, but many studios set a minimum of several hours. A half day is often a morning or an afternoon. Build and wrap usually count inside the booked time. Read more in what a studio costs and plan your shoot day.
When should I hire a photo studio and when a film studio?
A photo studio is often enough for stills. For film you also check sound, power, shoot length and whether you can monitor from a control room. Some rooms are offered as photo and film studios. Read photo studio or film studio or filter film studios.
How do I book a studio through Shootspace?
Shootspace is a directory, not a booking platform. You pick a studio in the directory, open the listing and follow Book this studio to the studio's own website. You book and pay there; we do not take a commission on that booking. What to ask the studio is in what you ask before you book.
What do daylight, blackout and cyclorama mean?
A daylight studio uses light from windows or skylights. A blackout studio can be darkened so you control the light yourself. A cyclorama, or cyc, is a seamless curve from wall to floor, not an ordinary straight wall. Read daylight or blackout and green screen or cyclorama, or filter in the directory.
