Product photography in a rented studio: what do you need?

What you need for a product shoot in a hired studio: a cyc or table, light, loading and enough time to build.

Choose a space that fits your product

Small products can sit on a table against paper. For larger objects or isolated product images, a white infinity wall or even cyclorama can be useful so the horizon disappears. Filter for cyclorama. Studio Big Time explicitly mentions product photography on a seamless white background, with loading at the door.

Light, background and access

Ask whether continuous lights or flash come with the hire, whether you may build your own setup, and whether the floor or cyc must be protected. A blackout helps if you want the same colour all day; see daylight versus blackout. Large products or a car need a drive-in: Revontuli states that vehicles can come inside, and XYZ Studio B lists a street-level roller door.

What you bring to the hired studio

Besides the camera: clamps, tape, gloves, cleaning kit for shiny products, perhaps a turntable or extra paper in the right width. Props sometimes come with the hire (Studio Big Time lists 86 items) and sometimes not. Check what’s included and plan the build inside the booked hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a film studio for product photos?
Usually not. A photo studio or hybrid room with a cyc and controlled light is often enough. For video or vehicles, also check sound, power and access. See photo studio or film studio.
