Saving money on studio hire

Save on studio hire by comparing the space, hire period and included facilities.

Do not hire more space or time than you need

Extra space or hire time can add unnecessary costs. Compare published rates in what a studio costs and see whether your shoot needs an hour, a half day or a day. An interview or pack shot often fits a half day; a video with a set rarely does.

Do not pay twice for the same thing

If lights, a cyc or props already come with the hire, you do not need to rent them again. Filter for lighting included or cyclorama and read what’s included. A daylight studio can save on lamps, but is not automatically cheaper; see daylight versus blackout.

Avoid extra costs

Overrun, damage to a green screen, a missing blackout or a studio without parking can make the ‘cheap’ option expensive. Ask about terms and allow enough time; see your shoot day and terms. If a studio does not publish a price, ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is a studio outside the Randstad always cheaper?
Not necessarily. The directory has both low and high rates inside and outside the large cities. Compare published amounts and what is included, not only the place name.
Does a membership help?
Some studios, such as Studio2Go, mention a membership from a set monthly amount if you come often. That applies only there; run the numbers for your own number of days.
